"Little Potala Palace" — largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. Built in 1679, home to over 700 monks. Golden roofs, red walls, and 179 steps leading to the main hall. Ancient manuscripts and thangka paintings inside. Morning chanting at 9 AM. The monastery dominates the landscape above the city.
Ancient Tibetan town, also known as "Moon City" for its white stone streets. Nearly 1,400 years old. Features the world's largest manually spun prayer wheel (龟山公园) — 21 meters tall, takes multiple people to spin. Heavily damaged in 2014 fire, now beautifully restored. Best visited early morning or evening for atmosphere.
Sacred mountain of Tibetan Buddhism — the most beautiful peak in Yunnan. At 6,740m, the main peak "Kawagebo" is unclimbed and revered. Best viewed at sunrise when the "Golden Mountain" phenomenon illuminates the peak. Base camp treks and village homestays available. Weather-dependent — cloud cover common.
World's deepest river canyon — 3,793m deep, carved by the Yangtze River. Dramatic hiking along cliff edges with river roaring below. Accessible from Shangri-La side via Qiaotou village. The "Hutiao Xia" (Tiger Leaping Pass) offers the most dramatic canyon views.
Tibetan and plateau cuisine — hearty, warming, and unique
Salt yak butter tea — the daily drink of Tibetan highlanders. Warming, energizing, unique taste (acquired!). Found at every Tibetan restaurant and homestay. The salty, fatty tea is an acquired taste but essential for altitude life.
Mutton and vegetable hot pot, Tibetan style. Rich broth with yak meat, potatoes, handmade noodles. Different from Yunnan hot pot — heartier, more aromatic. Found at Tibetan restaurants in Dukezhong Old Town.
Steamed Tibetan dumplings — meat or vegetable filling. Similar to Chinese baozi but with Tibetan spices and preparation. Cheap, filling, available everywhere. Try the "qingke" (highland barley) version.
Lean, protein-rich meat, essential for high altitude nutrition. Yak jerky, yak sausage, yak steak. Try at traditional Tibetan restaurants. Yak meat hot pot is the local specialty.
