Best Time to Visit

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)

Best season. Pleasant temperatures, peony flowers in Luoyang (April), and comfortable for temple visits.

☀️ Summer (Jun-Aug)

Hot and humid (35°C+). Best to avoid. Good for indoor museum visits and evening street food.

🍂 Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Second-best season. Cool and dry. Beautiful fall colors at Yuntai Mountain and Shaolin.

❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)

Cold and dry (-5 to 5°C). Few tourists. Lower prices but some outdoor areas less enjoyable.

  • Airport: Zhengzhou is a major aviation hub with connections across China and some international routes.

🚄 By Train

  • Railway: Zhengzhou is China's most important rail junction. High-speed to Beijing (2.5h), Xi'an (2h), Wuhan (2h).

🚌 By Bus

  • Bus: Good bus network connecting all cities. Zhengzhou to Shaolin (1.5h), Kaifeng (1h), Luoyang (2h).

🚗 By Car

  • Driving: Excellent highway network. Self-driving between Zhengzhou, Luoyang, and Kaifeng is very convenient.

⚠️ Important Reminders

  • Luoyang Peonies: Visit in mid-April for the Luoyang Peony Festival — millions of flowers in full bloom. The city's signature event.
  • Shaolin Tips: Arrive early to catch the morning martial arts demonstration. The pagoda forest is equally impressive.
  • Longmen Grottoes: Spend 3-4 hours. The Vairocana Buddha (Fengxian Temple) is the masterpiece. Go afternoon for best light.
  • Kaifeng Night Market: The Gulou Night Market is one of China's best. Try tangbao (soup dumplings) and guantangbao.
  • Henan Museum: Allow 3 hours minimum. The nine national treasures include bronze vessels from the Shang Dynasty.
  • Yuntai Mountain: The Red Stone Gorge (Hongshi Xia) is the highlight — allow 2-3 hours for the full scenic area.
