Best Time to Visit

🌸 Spring (Mar-May)

Warming up quickly. Sandstorms possible in March-April. Pleasant by May with blooming apricot blossoms.

☀️ Summer (Jun-Aug)

Hot (30-35°C) but dry. Great for desert activities. Wine harvest begins in August.

🍂 Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Best season. Comfortable temperatures, clear skies, autumn colors in the mountains. Wine harvest season.

❄️ Winter (Dec-Feb)

Cold and dry (-10 to -15°C). Few tourists. Some attractions have reduced hours.

Getting Around Ningxia

✈️ By Air

  • Airport: Yinchuan Hedong airport connects to most major Chinese cities with 1-3 hour flights.

🚄 By Train

  • Railway: Yinchuan connects by high-speed rail to Xi'an (3h), Lanzhou (3h), and Beijing (6h).

🚌 By Bus

  • Bus: Local buses connect Yinchuan to Shapotou (2.5h) and other towns within Ningxia.

🚗 By Car

  • Driving: Compact region — easy to drive. Yinchuan to Shapotou is 2.5 hours on good highways.

⚠️ Important Reminders

  • Try the Lamb: Ningxia's hand-pulled lamb noodle soup and roasted whole lamb are legendary. Seek out Hui Muslim restaurants.
  • Wine Tasting: Visit at least one Helan Mountain winery — Silver Heights, Helan Qingxue, and Changyu Moser XV are excellent.
  • Desert Adventure: At Shapotou, try sand sliding down the dunes and crossing the Yellow River on a traditional sheepskin raft.
  • Western Xia History: Read up on the mysterious Western Xia Dynasty before visiting — their script is still undeciphered.
  • Muslim Culture: Respect Hui Muslim customs. Halal restaurants are everywhere — they serve excellent food.
  • Sandstorms: Avoid March-April if sensitive to dust. Summer and autumn have the clearest skies.
